Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Description: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team. As a Heavy Equipment Operator, you will be responsible for operating a variety of contractor equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. Your primary focus will be on ensuring safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment while performing various tasks related to street and utility systems maintenance.

Responsibilities:

  1. Equipment Operation: Safely operate trucks, construction equipment, and power equipment such as backhoes, loaders, excavators, and skid steers. Perform loading, hauling, and unloading of equipment, materials, and supplies. Operate small tools and equipment for maintenance tasks.
  2. Maintenance and Inspection: Conduct routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment. Report any defects or repairs to the supervisor. Keep equipment clean and in good working condition.
  3. Utility and Street Maintenance: Assist the line crew in digging ditches, trenches, and hoisting materials. Install and maintain traffic control devices. Plow snow and salt roads according to departmental policies. Adhere to safety standards and precautions while performing all tasks.
  4. Teamwork and Communication: Collaborate effectively with other team members, supervisors, and the public. Provide assistance as a groundperson on the line crew when required. Control traffic at work sites by flagging and ensure the safety of all individuals involved.
  5. Safety and Compliance: Adhere to proper safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe work environment. Follow verbal and written instructions accurately. Observe safety precautions and exercise sound judgment in all operations.
  6. Documentation and Reporting: Maintain records of equipment usage, inspections, and maintenance activities. Complete required reports and documentation accurately and promptly.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience operating medium and heavy equipment, with at least two (2) years related to utility or street systems.
  • Valid CDL license.
  • Working knowledge of heavy equipment operations and safety precautions.
  • Familiarity with street and utility maintenance practices, materials, and tools.
  • Proficiency in operating various equipment and tools listed in the job description.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, supervisors, and the public.
  • Physical stamina to perform manual tasks in varying weather conditions.
  • Capability to drive and operate equipment under different circumstances.
  • Ability to interpret construction specifications or blueprints.
  • Capable of making independent judgments with significant impacts on the organization.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • The job requires frequent use of hands, fingers, and arms to handle equipment and tools.
  • Regular standing, talking, and hearing are expected, with occasional walking, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, tasting, and smelling.
  • The ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
  • Good vision abilities, including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Work is primarily conducted outdoors, exposing the employee to various weather conditions.
  • The employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, vibration, high places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risks of electrical shock.
  • The work environment may involve loud noise levels.
